Theo and the River of Lost Sounds
Chapter 1: The Quiet River
Theo loved making up songs, so he was surprised when the River of Lost Sounds became completely quiet. The river normally carried bird calls, giggles, bells, and the splash of rain in shining bubbles. Now even the fish swam without a whisper. An old otter guide named Ripple asked Theo to help, but Theo began listing every possible reason at once. Ripple raised a paw. The first clue, he said, would be heard only when Theo stopped talking.
Chapter 2: The Smallest Clue
Theo waited until he could hear the water moving around the stones. Beneath the current came a tiny tap-tap, like a spoon against a cup. He followed it to a crack in a crystal bridge, where a little singing pebble was trapped. The pebble did not need to be pulled out; it needed someone to notice the rhythm of the river and tap back. Theo copied the pattern slowly. The bridge answered with a warm chord, and a few lost sounds returned.
Chapter 3: A Song Made Together
The returned sounds floated downstream, but they did not know where to settle. Theo listened to each one: a frog's plop, a bellfish's ring, a seal's laugh. He invited every creature to add its sound only after hearing the sound before it. Soon the river carried a new song made of many different voices. Theo learned that listening was not waiting for his turn to speak. It was making room for another voice to become clear.
