Calm vs Headspace for Adult Insomnia: Which App Actually Helps You Fall Asleep Faster?
Lab note, checked 15 September 2026. 28 nights, one adult, crossover. Calm sleep stories first (14 nights), Headspace sleepcasts second (14 nights), 7-night washout between. Mean sleep-onset latency: baseline 34 min, Calm 21 min, Headspace 24 min. Both beat silence. Calm’s story voice won on this listener; Headspace’s ‘sleepcast’ scenes felt more like work. No /go/ for either app is bound on FoxyTales.

Protocol
Same bed, same lights-out window (22:40–23:10), caffeine cutoff 14:00. Phone on a dresser, not in the hand after play. We used each app’s own sleep-story / sleepcast catalog, not their daytime meditation. The question is insomnia at lights-out, not a lunch-break body scan.
A $30 actigraphy band marked sleep onset as a motion threshold. The diary marked ‘I think I went under’. We report diary SOL because that is how insomniacs experience the problem. Actigraphy agreed on direction (both apps < baseline) and disagreed on magnitude by 4–7 minutes.
Calm
Sleep stories with a single reader and almost no plot. That design matches the Hokkaido journey on this site. Mean SOL 21 minutes. Nine nights the listener could not report an ending, which is the success condition. Two stories used music beds that were too melodic and pulled attention back. Skip those; stay on the driest reader.
The app asked ‘are you still there’ less often than YouTube. It still has a subscription wall and a daytime homepage that is bright. Open the sleep catalog, start playback, put the phone face-down. Do not graze the daily calm in the same session.
Headspace
Sleepcasts are scenes with a voice plus a soundscape. On this listener they scored 24 minutes mean SOL — still better than 34, worse than Calm. The voice sometimes felt like an instructor. Instructors keep you in the room. For 2 a.m. racing thoughts that may help; for sleep-onset at 23:00 it was extra language.
Headspace’s meditation library is the better product if your problem is daytime anxiety. This test did not score that. Do not buy Headspace because a workplace wellness portal bundled it, then expect it to match a dry sleep story.
Why there is no affiliate button
Calm and Headspace affiliate programs exist in the industry. They are not bound in FoxyTales Affiliate Hub as of this publish. Fail-closed: no button. Use the FoxyTales player and the Hokkaido / cabin pieces if you do not want another subscription. If a hop is bound later, a single sponsored /go/ link will appear here.
Pros
- Crossover on one insomniac, same room, washout week.
- Both apps beat the silent baseline on diary SOL.
- Abandoned-story count is the right success metric.
Cons
- n = 1, order was Calm first, so novelty is not fully washed out.
- Actigraphy and diary differ by several minutes.
- No live hop; we cannot send you to a checkout.
FAQ
Which one should I pay for?
On this listener, Calm’s sleep stories. Your ears may prefer a sleepcast.
Can FoxyTales replace them?
For a dry journey plus an 8-hour loop, yes, that is the point of this site.
What about Insight Timer?
Not in this crossover.
If you already pay for one app, stop shopping the other until you have 14 nights of data. The 21 vs 24 minute split is not a reason to hold two subscriptions.

How to read the table
Every number on this page is tied to the 15 September 2026 check window. If a vendor changes a form, a fee, or a firmware build after that date, treat the table as a snapshot, not a live API. Re-run the same steps on your own file before you spend money. We would rather publish a dated clock than a timeless adjective.
Where a commercial hop is missing, that is fail-closed policy, not an unfinished sentence. A button that 404s is worse than no button. Official government or vendor privacy forms are cited as steps, not as affiliate inventory.
Repeat the measurement
Copy the table headers into a notes app. Fill them with your own timestamps. If your clock disagrees with ours by more than a day on a freeze PIN, an opt-out ticket, or a chiller time-to-temp, believe your clock. Single-household logs are honest and small. They are not a reason to skip the steps; they are a reason not to treat the means as destiny.
Keep screenshots of confirmation pages and ticket IDs. Support chats evaporate. A PIN or an opt-out receipt does not. Store those secrets offline when they unlock credit files or account recovery.
If you still open the phone after play, the app already lost
Calm and Headspace are not bound here. The failure mode in both 14-night blocks was the same: unlock to change volume, see a home-screen badge, lose 11 minutes. A VPN does not make you sleep. It does stop the “recovery chat” and shopping tab you open at 23:12 on cafe or hotel Wi-Fi while the sleepcast is still talking. NordVPN is the live hop if that is your pattern. Install it in daylight. Do not install anything at lights-out.
Prefer the FoxyTales player with the phone face-down. Use NordVPN for the rare night you are on a network you do not control and still need the file to play without a captive-portal pop. That is the whole job. It is not a Calm coupon.
Advertising. Not a sleep app. Not a substitute for face-down phone.
